About Veterans Day
Veterans Day, which is November 11 every year, is a federal holiday, a bank holiday, and, in most states (including Massachusetts), a state holiday. That means federal employees, including military members, students, and many workers are typically given the day off. Even though many of us do not attend work or school for Veterans Day, it is still an important time to reflect on our military’s commitment to our country.
Memorial Day is similar to Veterans Day but a little bit different. A lot of people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country. Veterans Day is the day to thank and honor all of those who served in the military, not just those who have died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. In fact, Veterans Day is mostly intended to thank living veterans for their service, to appreciate their contributions to our national security, and to acknowledge that those who served have sacrificed a lot for our country.
The Teddy Bear Village Acknowledges Veterans Day
Every year, we take November 11 to remember our veterans and thank them for their service and devotion to our country. For this reason, the Teddy Bear Village is closed every November 11th, or on the observed date if the holiday falls on a weekend. Our hope is that you use this time to spend together as a family and to reflect on the freedom we have because of our veterans. As a parent or guardian, you can offer a gentle explanation to your young one about what a veteran is and why we honor them. For instance: “Veterans are people who helped keep us safe. On Veterans Day, we say a special ‘thank you’ to them.”
